I have a few friends who are under 18 but they all know my age immediately after they meet me. Often they are just looking for an adult to talk to that is not a parent.I just want to know if I it is illegal to talk to them simply because they are under 18.I agree with my colleague that talking to a minor is not illegal.However, in this age of our litigous society, I would suggest you protect yourself and save copies of all the chats with a minor so that you could prove there were no inappropriate conversations.The attorney client relationship is not established by this post.I agree with the other attorneys who have answered.
There's nothing illegal about talking to minors online, but your comment that they are looking for someone to talk to who isn't a parent suggests that whatever discussions you're having might veer into fields that maybe the minors' parents wouldn't think are appropriate.
